Top Story

  • Google's Googlebook is the company's answer to Google's Chromebook.  (Tom's Hardware)

    It's a laptop running Android.

    Which raises the question: Why didn't the Chromebook run Android in the first place?

    There are no specs or indeed any hardware information at all; that will be left to Google's partners including Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo.

    It might potentially be a good time to be launching a laptop that doesn't need 32GB of RAM to get out of bed - as indicated by the runaway success of Apple's MacBook Neo.  And there's a slim chance that at least one of the partner companies won't screw things up.

1 The same managers who think "more token usage = good" probably think "more lines of code = good". I don't need to explain to any experienced programmer why the goal should be fewer lines of code, not more. Naturally when adding a feature, 99% of the time you're going to add lines of code, not subtract them. But anytime you end up with fewer lines of code than you started with is a cause for celebration.

But lines of code is an easy metric to track, so lazy managers end up tracking it instead of the real, but hard-to-track, metrics like "increasing user satisfaction" or "reduction in # of bugs".

2 There were a bunch of slobbering articles about the (ugh) Googlebook yesterday, even though there's pretty much no real info about it yet.

3 During the 2008 real estate mini-meltdown, one of my company's customers laid off a whole bunch of people (they built modular homes, if I remember correctly).  I was talking to an executive there and she told me that they had a number of people who abused FMLA:  they had a point system, for example, where you'd get a point for being late for work or whatever, and too many points would lead to disciplinary action up to termination, so they would do stuff like call and say "I need an hour of FMLA" because they were hung over and needed extra time to wake up before coming in or whatever.  I was told that they had a list of the worst cases and they were the first people who weren't going to be rehired when conditions improved.
If Amazon's management is in the least bit competent, the people tokenmaxxing may wind up being the majority of the next wave of layoffs.
