Top Story
- Sam Altman says you have to accept some bad with the bad when it comes to AI. (Politico)
I'm sure he does.
- Oh, forgot to mention: Daylight saving time has kicked in here, so I'm back to posting at 4AM ET.
Tech News
- There is no plague in Buryatia. (CNN)
What a comforting "fact" that is to know.
- Nvidia has introduced a $4999 version of the DGX Spark AI computer with 64GB of RAM. (The Register)
It's a $5000 RTX 5070. It's also 25% more than the original 128GB version.
Thanks, Nvidia.
- Run a 125-billion parameter AI on commodity hardware. Nvidia hates this one weird trick. (GitHub)
It will work on a regular RTX 5070. Or indeed a Radeon 6700 XT from two generations ago. The Hacker News link has everyone talking about the RTX 4090 for some reason, but it's a lot more general than that.
You do need a good amount of system RAM for decent performance, but I have that, and it works on any Nvidia or AMD graphics card from the last few years with at least 12GB of RAM, something I also have.
- A federal judge called Flock cameras "indiscriminate mass surveillance" and used that opinion to suppress the discovery of 91 pounds of meth in a woman's car. (Tech Crunch)
The article uses the term "alleged" here, but you can't "allege" 91 pounds of meth. That quantity has a presence all of its own.
- sudo make me an ipod. (Sudo Music)
Huh. It worked.
Anime Roundup
- A Tale of the Secret Saint: Everybody except the older sister including our heroine is, if not an idiot, at best an idiot savant. The absent mother presumably died of exasperation.
- From Far Away: You got 90s isekai in my 2026! Nice touch that instead of everyone in the other world speaking fluent modern Japanese, nobody does.
- Magic Repo Man: A predictable first episode potentially redeemed by the appearance of the gremlin fairy at the end. Will have to see how it goes in the next episode.
- Magical Explorer: Mostly trash, but when it's not being trash actually manages to pull off some cool moments.
- Overgeared: Almost interesting, and could work well as an isekai or straight fantasy, but makes absolutely no sense as a VR game series.
- Romelia War Chronicle: Actually good, particularly in the understated dynamics of father-daughter relationship. Solid art and animation too. One to watch.
Musical Interlude
Disclaimer: sudo make me a sandwich.

A dedicated music player device not made by Apple sounds like a good thing to me, but I want a lot more details on their "Sudo OS" before I spend $250 on something my existing phone can already do pretty well with some decent apps.
Is it Linux-based? Have you open-sourced it? Can I tweak the source code of the OS running on my device, then compile it and upload it to the device? (E.g., if I don't like the way they implemented this exact feature, and I want to tweak it to fit my preferences...)
I'd want to know the answers to these questions and a lot more before I carved out $250 from my budget for a device that won't ship until the end of 2027.

I saw overgeared on webtoons, but I think I haven't even checked the description. It has literally dozens of things I am more interested in than Overgeared. It feels like things I am following and interested in there include a rather excessive number of not very groundbreaking or innovative murim stories.
(I'm arguing with myself about the quality of the end of the list I think is better done. A 'six best' list of murim stories once one is on one's fifth or sixth dozenth murim story are not the ones that are necessarily accessible to someone who has zero prior experience. Murim are korean Wuxia or sometimes xianxia, with a wider over all range than wuxia, but also sometimes a much narrower borrowing of wuxia/murim inherited world building.
I mean if a Tang family refugee student at Mount Hua were to be reincarnated into a different Tang family refugee student at Mount Hua, and were to learn the arts of Shaolin and Wutang before becoming the Cheonma, I think I might not blink.
Though if someone made both 'later more degenerate era of martial arts', 'very specific information about how to avoid a future problem', and 'dude is mostly interested in financial investment, and very specific details of how Korean political events in certain years made criminal activity harder or created various other financial activities' work in the same story, I might have to applaud.
Argh, I am trying to figure out how to do that now.)

ARgh again, 'various other financial /opportunities/'.
That last subsubgenre is not murim. But, 'Reborn Rich' and 'Grandson of the Loan Shark King' work far too well considering the amount of 'almost everyone else in this family are stupid and evil', and financial crimes are going on.
I started onto Reborn Rich because someone in the comments of something else was insisting that it was good background financial and business education. It could be, but it depends on how many deficits one has in one's existing grounding.
The comments are rather full of idiots on that website run by Naver, quite a lot of them it is better not to engage with. Almost none of them seem to reread the series they follow, and they don't go back with questions and take notes.
I mean, yes, sometimes you can't even follow what is going on with a score card, but mostly the better written ones are comprehensible when they are not being super abbreviated and hastily finished because certain things are too controversial after the CCP backed judicial/political coup in South Korea. (US Biden, Brazil, and South Korea is way too much of a coincidence.)
