2 Dare I hope "smart" quotes work?:
"If I were buying individual stocks, I would think twice about buying SpaceX, which is tremendously overhyped,” he tells me.

Aside:  I wonder how long I've had my email address spelled wrong.

4 I was initially intrigued by Robin's mention of mathematical symbols, then decided that if I don't know about it, I don't need it. Then looked it up. U+2102 and U+211D are actually symbols I might use. I think the only time I ever made a blog comment where I meant the double struck R, I just wrote it as a bold capital R. I did learn about at least one cool new-to-me symbol (U+2621). However, if I have little time to read or to do mathematics, I expect I have little time to write anything that genuinely needs any challenging notation.

5 PatBuckman - the mathematical symbols I was thinking of were these: https://symbolfyi.com/glossary/mathematical-alphanumeric/

And my memory was slightly wrong: the symbols in that block are actually letter variations used in math. Most of them I won't type into the comment box because the bug that's making emojis disappear would probably cause the comment to disappear if I did. But some of them, like ℝ (the symbol usually used for the set of all real numbers), are in the basic Unicode plane. The higher plane was assigned the rest of the alphabet in double-struck style, because some people wanted to use the other Latin letters for abstract (and abstruse) concepts.

And then, of course, people started using those characters for "I want italic characters in a place that doesn't respect HTML italic tags". Because it's the Internet, so of course people are going to find "creative" uses for any standard. :-)

6 Yeah, I'm going to set it to convert higher-plane Unicode characters into HTML entities before saving to the database.  That will probably fix the problem.

7 Pixy - What database are you using, if you don't mind my asking?

P.S. I'm being sfleeb'ed again. Looks like it's triggering at random; it's been weeks since I saw that. But refreshing the page is keeping the sfleeb text, so once it triggers it seems to stay triggered.

Posted by: at Tuesday, July 21 2026 07:11 PM (Uh5Zo)

8 Huh. Posted a comment and the sfleebs all changed to "final.user.name" and "final.user.email". (In case those strings get changed in the posting process, they were the words "final", a dot, then "user", a dot, then "name" or "email").

9 Previous two uncredited posts from Uh5Zo were from me.
