Okay, they're "young adult" novels, but that doesn't actually require the writing to be eye-gougingly awful. I'll stick with Terry Pratchett or Garth Nix, thanks all the same.

2 Apparently yes.  You can turn it off, but it sounds like its on by default.

4 From Slashdot, Home -> Settings -> Popular Highlights -> Turn Off.

5 On my Kindle Fire, there isn't any "Popular Highlights" choice in "Settings". Probably that was in the earlier versions of the Kindle.
