The blogospheric hive mind is having a serious trouble pigeonholing Lucky Star. So far the most flattering comment came from Impz of THAT (in comments to his co-blogger Lupus bashing): "My impressiong with Azumanga is more of a school life portrayal of
slightly wacky yet realistic school, while Lucky Star is a parody of
the japanese otaku + life culture." OK, I get that. The show is overloaded with in-jokes. They probably tried for Excel Saga (updated for 2007) rather than Azumanga.

I can certainly see the influence of Excel Saga here; calling it a cross between Excel and Azumanga Daioh would probably convey the general feel pretty well. But it doesn't have the charm of Excel Saga either.
