The ending credits to the incomparable Buckaroo Banzai, of course. The entire gang shows up, even the one who died during the movie, because otherwise it wouldn't be awesome.

Like many things in the movie, it's never explained. The brief dialogue when he shows up in costume suggests he doesn't really know much about the group, and was expecting to rehearse for a show.
