End Of Summer Edition

Top Story

  • Intel's new 24 core i9-13980HX is faster than AMD's 32 core Threadripper.  (WCCFTech)

The Threadripper 2990WX to be specific.

    From 2018.

Which was kind of terrible.  Zen 1 / Zen+ was a different design to what we have today, and the 2990WX was just four Ryzen desktop chips wired together with only two of them having direct access to RAM and the other two having to hop through the other chips.  It did work and was one of the fastest chips around at the time, but that didn't last for long: It is slower than the 12 core 3900X that came out only one year later.  (WCCFTech)

So Intel's 24 core laptop chip from 2023 is beating a AMD's 12 core desktop chip from 2019.  Not bad, but not remarkable either.

  • Weather forecast indicates one more day of summer here in New House City, followed by thunderstorms, rain, flooding, plague of frog, and all the rest.  Good times.

1 population declines according to what at least semi official people are willing to put on paper

PRC official claims are inhernetly sus

But, more broadly, probably none of the population numbers or estimates have been reliable for some time.  Some fairly corrupt governments have been getting outside funds based on population claims.

Also, lower population is probably more reason for concern than higher population.

3 Beelink sells NUCs.  This weekend I decided to get one to run as a database server.  They have one, the SEI12, that has two i5-1235U models, one with 16GB+500GB, the other with 32GB+500GB, both with Windows 11 Pro preinstalled.  For whatever reason there are several companies selling it and i found one that had the 32GB model for the same price as everyone else was selling the 16GB model, so I ordered one--just in time, because the price is back up to regular now.
It turns out it's a surprisingly good machine:  2P+8E cores.  So far all I've done is set up Windows and install the database software and Steam, and then put Graveyard Keeper on it, because that's not very graphically intensive.  The machine is basically silent in normal use.
The box wrapper had instructions on it specifically saying to not connect it to the internet until after Windows setup was complete.  Only possible reason I can think of is that they wanted to help people avoid the forced Microsoft account creation, which I thought was pretty funny.

4 Pat:  taking the PRC claim at face value for the moment, it's interesting that it took about an entire human lifetime for their one-child policy to actually work at reducing population.  Give how they lie about so much else, in retrospect it's almost surprising they didn't start lying about it a decade or more ago.
