Alex Karp is maybe an example of a PhD who understands precisely how and why the academic world has fucked up, and does not want to go to the gallows alongside the people who got faculty positions by, for example, saying that it was okay to burn down poor black neighborhoods. I've come across PhDs who are rather more intensively blackpilled about what the universities have done, compared to, say, current masters students.
The tech crunch writer and its expected audience seem to be a bunch of stupid whiners, but at least it linked to the original press release.
Karp did not say anything controversial in my eyes, and is a breath of fresh air.

The 9050 may or may not be a silly card, but note that Toms' is somewhat focused on AAA gaming, and the article talks about Fortnite.
If you're not doing AAA gaming, there are probably about a million indie games that don't need anywhere near that much VRAM.
