Noodling

Albeit a different kind of noodling.  First project I've been working on was building out a practical version of the database I created a proof-of-concept for in Python years ago.  LMDB, MessagePack, LuaJIT, and ZeroMQ did the heavy lifting, and it was actually fast - 1GB per second of reads on a small VM - until I started on the indexes and then it all caved in.

Now I'm working on replacing LuaJIT in there with a capability-based language that is simpler and more secure, again using a model I tinkered with years ago.

It's AI...  Antislop?  What I'm doing is the exact opposite of Node.js at every level, and using AI assistance to pull it together.

1 I suppose if you were in the unlikely position of having DDR5 memory, and all the other components you needed, but were in urgent need of a new CPU, this might be a decent deal.  But that's pretty niche.  Like, I'm still rocking my replaced 14700K, and I'm holding out probably for Nova Lake, and that only if it's a big jump in performance and at a reasonable cost, and even then probably only if this CPU starts to degrade like my original, although I run it at stock except for the BIOS multicore enhancements, so that seems fairly unlikely.  I guess "12th gen CPU needing replacement and I don't want to wait another year" is about the only sensible use case.  But then again, people will buy a 5090 so they can game at maxed out settings at 4K, so....

2 If they were keeping the same socket for Nova Lake it would be a great deal.  But they're not, so it isn't.

3 Y'know, it's getting really easy to spot AI companies that have no path to profitability: they announce they're making a physical product.

Apple pies are delicious. But never mind apple pies. What colour is a green orange?
