Ship Shipping Ships Edition

Top Story

  • The modern world depends on a handful of ships.  (The Verge)

Specifically, the 22 ships designed and dedicated to repairing the undersea cables that make the internet inter.

It's a good article, and it covers the whole history of undersea cables and cable repair:
Field fared no better. Twelve years after he began, he had endured severed cables, near sinkings, and had one "success”: a cable laid in 1858 that prompted celebrations so enthusiastic that revelers set fire to New York City Hall. The cable failed weeks later.
    We need more of this.

The only problem is that as you scroll through it, every so often it hits an image gallery and scrolls sideways.

I'm impressed they found something worse than the experimental UI over at YouTube.

1 I did not read the undersea cable article. You mentioned the presentation as a "problem." Yeah, like the iceberge was a "problem" for the titanic. That idiot presentation makes the article completely unreadable.
But I do have a question - many years ago Neil Stephenson wrote a similar article for Wired. Is this article better? More informative? Is it worth the scrolling idiocy? Did the authors really think they were breaking new ground with this?

2 Yeah, I couldn't make it through more than about 3 scroll actions, either.  The Verge--still the same site that put out that awful "how to build a computer" video all those years ago.

3 Google article: "On Tuesday night, Google ordered the arrest of nine workers in Sunnyvale and New York, who were told they would be locked out of their accounts and offices and were not expected to return to work until contacted by HR, according to a statement from the No Tech for Apartheid campaign.

Google last month fired a worker who protested a speech by Google's top executive in Israel at a conference in New York."

Your Akismet stuff is still rejecting "smart" quotes, btw.

Apple pies are delicious. But never mind apple pies. What colour is a green orange?
