- The US and Japan have agreed that nuclear power is essential to reducing global warming. (AP News)
Now, set aside for the moment whether global warming is real or whether, if real, it is on balance harmful: It is absolutely true that if you want to reduce carbon outputs without destroying the global economy, you need to increase the use of nuclear power.
Which is why it's so remarkable to see the head of the EPA saying this.

- Intel's next-plus-one generation Emerald Rapids server CPUs will be out late next year with up to 64 cores. (Tom's Hardware)
AMD has 64 core CPUs now, with 96 core parts coming this year, and 128 cores early next year.
The one thing Intel has in its favour is a full 512-bit implementation of AVX-512, but for typical commercial workloads - databases, web sites, business applications - AVX-512 is basically useless.
- Google has received DMCA takedown notices for 4 million unique domains. (TorrentFreak)
Including the White House, the FBI, and the Vatican.
- LG is bringing NFTs to its smart TVs. (The Verge)
Ugh.
They are using the Hedera blockchain, though, which is actually the least awful blockchain I've looked at if you really must distribute NFTs for some reason.

"buy, sell and enjoy high-quality digital artworkâ€
There is something delightful about the abuse of the word "digital" as an analogue for "created on a computer", espetially re artwork. I mean, fingerpainting is still a thing, right?

So, if one wanted to play around with AVX-512 at home, is there an inexpensive cpu/mobo out there?
Is Intel’s bios disabling just a thing for their own boards, or do other manufacturer’s incorporate it as well?

EdH, if you can get an Alder Lake that hasn't had the access disabled, and a motherboard with an older bios (and then make sure the bios and microcode don't get updated) you might be able to do it. I have an i5-12600K with an Asus motherboard I bought in February; CPU-Z doesn't show AVX-512 support, so I don't know if I got a chip with it disabled or if a later update killed it.
Looks like the Rocket Lake Xeon E 2300 series supports it, but the cheapest CPU I found with a quick search was the 2324G, a quad-core part, for $277, on eBay, and then you have to get a computer built around that.

Also, apparently, the Xeon W-1300 series. I found on Newegg an HPE ProLiant E-2314 system (quad core) for $1200, with 16GB of RAM. Alternatively, a W-1350 6-core CPU for $280 or so, and the cheapest motherboard with the appropriate chipset (W480) was about $350.

Oh, Zen 4 is supposed to support AVX-512, although I guess it's implemented as a pair of AVX-256 modules, if that matters any.

Well, I went and looked at the Wp page on Alder Lake, probably should have done that first. Not sure it is worth the effort, looks like you’d need a first chip run from late 2021, before they physically fused things, AND a compatible Bios (msi maybe). I already have more projects and hobbies than time…
