Pessimalism Anonymous Edition
- The BBC is bringing back Russell T Davies to revive Doctor Who. (BBC)
Which the BBC themselves killed.
I'm cautiously pessimistic. I don't think it will be good, but I think it might at least return to being watchable.
- Germany's attempts to balance free speech with their national pastime of stamping out all independent thought seems to be floundering. (MSN)
They are shocked that politicians are being criticised:
The aim of our legislative package is to protect all those who are exposed to threats and insults on the internetThey see being rude to those who richly deserve it as a crime to be punished.
Well, I don't live in Germany, so go fuck yourselves you fascist Furbies.
- Which VPN is best for you? (ZDNet)
They give top marks to NordVPN which got hacked two years ago. (Tech Crunch)
Second on the list is ExpressVPN which their own reporting says no-one should touch with a ten-foot pole.
Number three is Surfshark which... I haven't heard anything bad about. I haven't heard much about them at all, which might be a good sign, because when things go bad in the security world that invariably makes the news. Well, the news I follow.
- Hands on with HP's new Pavilion Aero. (Thurrott.com)
I mentioned this one before; it's a 13" laptop with an AMD CPU, a 16:10 2560x1600 display, and the Four Essential Keys. Potentially the best small laptop available right now with Dell's Inspiron 14 7000 no longer available.
Even South Canada Still Has Some Freedom of Speech Video of the Day
A Wisconsin teen sued after being threatened with jail over an Instagram post - and won.
Though Joseph Conrad is a great name for a sheriff.

Of course, we don't know yet how much more damage the current team will do with their final season. If they really give it the old scorched-earth treatment, perhaps the entire universe will need to regenerate along with the Doctor.

I'm not even opposed to the gender-swapping thing, if it's done well, which Jodie's run wasn't. Missy's portrayal was exceptional. I'm convinced she studied the original series episodes, because--her loopiness aside--she had that mix of aristocracy over thug down perfect. The big problem with gender-swapping characters is that it's an admission you can't come up with your own female heroines, but instead have to steal the reputation of an existing male one. I'd give a female 008, for example, a fair watch.

There does seem to be a level of suspicion about Davies' return given some of his expressed opinions seem to endorse the horrific story ideas that the current regime has given us.

Oddly enough, I was musing to an acquitance the other day about what it would have been like if Ray, not Ace, was picked to replace Mel as the companion for the Seventh Doctor. The dynamic would have been dramatically different.
Colin Baker was easily a better actor to play the Doctor, but once again, the Sixth Doctor was screwed by management, including at the start when they wanted the Sixth to be 'different.' It was a real pity, since Baker genuinely wanted to play the good Doctor, unlike some of the previous incumbents.
It is not like the series only started heading into messaging with the new series or even with the McCoy years - The Green Death and The Sunmakers are classic examples, on both sides of the spectrum.
