Downgrade And Refund Edition
Downgrade And Refund Edition
Tech News
- My new FTTC NBN connection is rated for a nominal 100/40 Mbps, but I'm getting 87.9 down and 41.4 up. Yeah, I'm not sure how the up speed is exceeding the nominal rate, but my ADSL connection did that too.
Anyway, so my ISP said because it was 12% short of the theoretical limit I could downgrade to a lower plan and get a refund or cancel and sign up with another provider with no contract fees.
No way. I just got this working and you're not getting rid of me that easily.
Also, my new (static) IP address is six digits, and I'm keeping it.
- The FTC is re-examining every corporate acquisition by Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google, and Microsoft over the past 10 years. (Tech Crunch)
Though it's not clear if they plan to do anything once they've examined them all.
- Hynix has licensed a new 3D chip stacking technology that promises up to a million interconnects per square millimetre. (AnandTech)
That's a lot of interconnects.
It's also about half the height of existing memory chip stacking methods.
- The Samsung Galaxy S20 range is here and it's expensive. (AnandTech)
The S20 Ultra at 6.9" is nearly as big as my Nexus 7, but at A$2000 for the 128GB model is just a little too expensive.
- When the government sets itself up to block misinformation, it also sets itself up to block information. (TechDirt)
In related news, water is still wet, fire is still hot, and Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead.
- Activision just pulled its games from Nvidia's streaming service. (WCCFTech)
It's not clear why, because you still have to buy the game first.
- What exactly is Windows 10X? (Thurrott.com)
(Premium article - you can read it for free but you have to sign up.)
Long story short: It's a virtualised Windows where everything is run in containers and presented over local RDP. Which is great for many reasons but I'm not sure performance is going to be one of them. We'll see.
- The iPhone 9 is on its way - probably - and might cost $399 unless it doesn't. (9to5Mac)
It's a replacement for the iPhone SE, so it will have a teeny-tiny 4.7" screen and a not completely insane price tag.
Disclaimer: I can see the fnords.
