Tech News

  • AnandTech reports on VirtualLink - a new standard connector for VR headsets combining DisplayPort 1.4, USB 3.1, and power delivery, so you aren't tethered to your desk by three separate cables.

Hidden away in the article is this little tidbit: Version 1.3 of the USB-C standard allows you to take over the four USB 2.0 pins in alt-mode, and convert them to another bidirectional high-speed lane.  (Or two lanes for output only.)  Potentially, that means a 50% increase in throughput using existing cables - perhaps a 30Gbps USB 3.3 is in the cards, falling back to USB 3.2/3.1 as needed?  (AnandTech)

  • Backblaze blogs about their eleven-nines file durability and why, after the first few nines, that doesn't mean anything.  (via Hacker News)

  • Apple's new top of the line i9 MacBook Pro can't maintain the stated base speed of its CPU due to thermal throttling - to the point that it can be slower than the cheaper i7 model.   Video

  • If the Windows 1803 update left you with a useless disk partition containing OEM files that you can't access anyway here's how to fix it without breaking your computer.

1 I just watched the i9 video--that's horrifying performance.  When he says "it can't maintain the base speed", he's saying "it bounces between 2.0 and 3.0 GHz".  By contrast, my Acer with an 8250 has a base speed of 1.8, but it can sustain 2.1 or so with Handbrake.  The i9 is actually 10% slower than the i7 (40 vs 36 minutes, rounded up, rendering in Premier Pro.)

Then he put the i9 in a freezer and it shrunk to 27.5 minutes, a full third faster, and probably more indicative of the raw performance of the processor.
Anyone who bought an i9 MacBook should return it unless they're only playing Farmville on it.

2 Yeah, it's not like this is a budget device - or for that matter, something you can update with aftermarket cooling.  It's a premium product from one of the largest and most profitable corporations in history.

3 "not like this is […] something you can update with aftermarket cooling."
Nonsense.  You can stick it in your freezer just like David did, and then remote into it!

4 Or move to Antarctica, I suppose.

5 Doesn't everyone carry around a 12-pound external water-cooling kit for their laptop? Everyone at the Palo Alto Starbucks will know you're a real Apple fan when they see it!

Apple pies are delicious. But never mind apple pies. What colour is a green orange?
