I read somewhere last night--maybe wccftech--that the "new, silent" keys are a stealthy way of not acknowledging the "a single grain of dust can break a key" issue and hopefully fixing it.

Yeah, they also offered free extended warranties for everyone with the old keyboard.
I have a "magic" keyboard on my iMac. The next day I went back to the store and got the full-size USB keyboard. Sadly, they don't sell it any more, but you can get third-party equivalents.

"third-party equivalents."
Are any of them built with mechanical keys?
I use a Corsair K70 at work. I like it a lot better than the crappy things that come with Dells, especially the low-profile keyboards of the last few years.

Yep, Matias and Das make mechanical keyboards with a Mac layout. Others too, but those I know about specifically.

I strongly recommend the CODE keyboard; I have one for my Mac at work, and another for my Windows gaming box, both with Cherry Green switches. At a lower price point, there's the MK Typist; I bought the Type A. (yes, I demand Glorious Clatter from my keyboards)
I would never buy another Matias product. Their key switches were nice, but the electronics, construction, and customer service were horrible.
