- Microsoft, rumoured to be looking at acquiring another independent game studio like InXile or Obsidian, has acquired independent game studios InXile and Obsidian. (GamesIndustry.biz)
This means that two of few the companies still producing games I like (InXile made Torment and Wasteland 2; Obsidian most recently Tyranny and Pillars of Eternity I and II) now have solid financial backing and distribution and don't have to scrabble around on Kickstarter.
And it's a hell of a lot better than Electronic Arts. Or Ubisoft. Or Activision.

I am of two minds at Microsft's purchase of Obsidian and InXile.
Among the positives, the studios will have much better publisher support, since Deep Silver really is not a standard a developer should aspire to having as their publisher.
Among the negatives, that probably means an end to InXile retrieving old Interplay IPs for revivals (Not necessarily a bad thing, given the how few Interplay IPs anyone remembers about, let alone fondly.). A shift toward console-centric games, which does not mesh well with the kind of games both studios have crowd-funded. The biggest negative will be the end of releasing the games on GoG, and probably Steam as well, in favor of Microsoft's own digital service.
The last of the negatives really makes me pessimistic.
