- Microsoft to announce a new Surface thing tomorrow. Most likely a low-end tablet device based on a sucky Atom CPU. (Slashdot)
- Microsoft gets date wrong, announces new Surface thing today. It has a 10" 1800x1200 (3:2) display, an Intel Pentium Gold 4415Y CPU, which is Kaby Lake and not Atom as I wrote immediately above, so better than I expected. All the usual bits, and some bits the competition have been busy eliminating like a microSD card slot and a headphone jack.
$399 with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage, and $549 with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage. Keyboard extra, pen extra. (Ars Technica)

The recent Pentiums are actually pretty good if you aren't demanding much from them. If all you wanna do is read email, FB, instwittergram, etc., they work well enough without making you feel like your computer's 3 years too old.
Also: I clicked one of your links and got /. on me. That wasn't very nice.

This is a much better Pentium than most of them - it's a just a low-power version of a Core i3.
And yes, the recent Atoms aren't so bad, as long as you have enough memory and an SSD. I picked up an Atom-based Lenovo Ideapad 110 last year with 2GB RAM and 32GB eMMC. The build quality is actually great, and it was dirt cheap since that branch of the retailer was closing down (under A$200 including sales tax, and it's currently US$225 on Amazon). But it has so little RAM and storage that just handling multiple browser tabs is a struggle. I think it will do fine if I wipe it and install Linux though.

Yeah, I was referring to the Pentium Golds which, as you say, are i3s these days. The Pentium Silver is an Atom.
IIRC I was trying a laptop a few months ago with, I think, a 4410Y, and was impressed with it. It compiled a trivial C# program in a non-horrible amount of time.
