Rant

Stupid Apache

If you're going to die with a fatal error, at least print out the damn error message!!

Nearly six hours of downtime over a problem I could have fixed in thirty seconds if it had just told me what was wrong. frown

2 You must interpret its coredumps like the wailings of a crying baby (or indeed the "coredumps" of a crying baby!).

3 Maybe one of these would help.

One of the questions I used to ask when interviewing potential hires was "What is the most useless error message you've ever seen?"

My own answer was "Syntax Error". But someone pointed out one that was part of the original PC BIOS. It went something like "Keyboard not found. Press F1 to continue."

6 (It helps to know that plugging in a keyboard on an early-model PC while the computer was turned on could destroy the keyboard interface chip...)

7 I rather liked the zen nature of the message that some Microsoft MSIs used to toss up: "the data is the error".

"Monitor Failure."

Yes, really.  It was on an old 286.

9 I think it's VHDL that has "Some Error Occurred" as a message.

Or one I'm familiar with that states "General Error" on transfer if and only if the selected COM port is already allocated by another process.  Surely that one could be made a BIT more clear to the end user so he or she doesn't call me up 4 times a week?  Hmm?

10 TRS-80 Level I basic.  Three error messages: What?, How? and Sorry.

Granted they only had 4K of ROM.

11 Error dialog pops up:

"No error occurred."
