And Another Thing!

One of the things I've wanted to be able to do for my larger users for some time is offer a virtual server solution, so their blog/forum/whatever can run reasonably isolated from the rest of the horde without me having to pay for dozens of small servers.

And the way I wanted to do this was with Virtuozzo and Plesk, because they work nicely together and offer a consistent and reasonably logical user interface.  (As opposed to CPanel, which, while it provides more functionality in some areas, is rather a mess.)

The only problem was that Softlayer didn't support any virtualisation product.  Then, when they finally did, it was bleedin' Microsoft Hyper-V.  And when they expanded their range a little, it was to offer Citrix Xenserver.  Neither of which really fit my needs.  They're not bad products, but they're not aimed at the webhosting market the way Virtuozzo is.

But today, Softlayer announced support for Virtuozzo too!  Yay!

And now the only problem is that with the Aussie dollar still in the toilet (albeit somewhat improved over its recent nadir) I don't know if I can afford it. sad

Tim Blair says:

now is a really great time for Australians to visit the US because flights have so few people on them and you can achieve business-class levels of space while riding in economy.

Also, now is a really great time for Americans to visit Australia because the stray coins you find in your car can buy a whole Tasmania.

The US$ is way down, as I understand it. If the Aus$ is down relative to the US buck, it must really be in the toilet.

(Vista's currency exchange rate gizmo says that the GBP is US$1.61. The Aus$ is US$0.67. The Canadian$ is US$0.83. There was a brief period in there where the Canadian $ was worth more than the US $. I guess the greenback has bounced back a lot recently.)

2 Actually, the US dollar seems to have held its own or improved against almost all currencies.  I see three blocs among the major currencies:

US, China and Japan, which have basically maintained parity.  (I believe the yuan is pegged against the greenback.)

European currencies (and Canada), which have dropped sharply against the first group.

Australia and New Zealand, which have dropped sharply against the first two groups.

Haven't really checked the minor currencies.

3 Yet another thing....
Is  Mee.nu considered for these purposes to be in Australia or Naru?

Posted by: The Brickmuppet at Monday, November 03 2008 04:49 PM (73lWn)

4 America.

The servers are in Dallas.  (At two different locations, but both datacenters are in Dallas.)

The legislation proposed by Senator Conroy (who can go fuck himself) applies specifically to controlling what Australians are allowed to see on the internet, rather than what they can say.  So mee.nu might get blocked here in Australia, but that won't stop you accessing it - or me either, of course, given that what they are trying to achieve is technically impossible and will be trivially easy to bypass.

Anyway, it's very likely to get blocked in the Senate, where the Labor Government holds a minority.  The Liberals are against it, and so it appears are the Greens, and that's enough to scuttle the bill.

Note the comments on this post. Looks like spam to me, alas. (Too bad; a real advertiser would be a nice thing.)

Googling for that email address turns up 881 comment spams.

7 Yeah, I get a fair bit of email from "advertisers", but that's the first time I've seen comment spam from them.
