Based on that result, I suspect that the damages from the counter-suit is going to kill them. They owe Novell a lot of royalties and I bet they don't have the money to pay it.

There was a time when SCO was a pretty neat company, you know that? I've even used their product, about 20 years ago, and it worked pretty well considering the pitiful state-of-the-then-art PC it was on.

2 I got my start developing business apps on Unix boxes in 1988, so I've spent some time with SCO products as well - Xenix, Unix and Unixware.  30 users on a 386/33.  And it was fast compared to what they had before.

But this SCO has almost nothing to do with that SCO.  They bought the name and very little else.

My guess is they expected to sue IBM for $5 billion, settle out of court for an unspecified amount (much smaller, but still large), and leverage that outcome to take on other companies.  EV1, a big hosting company, paid up to protect their customers from lawsuits.

But as soon as IBM refused to follow the script, SCO was doomed.
