Are you sure it wasn't actual kittens? Because mine growl at my dishwasher sometimes when it starts unexpectedly, visions of thrashing, possibly hostile animals therein doubtless dancing in their furry heads.
And, ruthless little killing machines that they are, they've already disposed of several other small appliances...
