Anime

Not A Distinction You'd Necessarily Want

Guess the anime:
This is one of the first mainstream anime series about incest — here, a romantic relationship between siblings — to be widely marketed in the U.S.

1 Koi Kaze -- which is on my "never" list.

What's the Japanese for "ewwww?"

4 Yep. I picked up Koi Kaze when I was getting into anime without realizing what it was about. I never managed to finish it - it just creeped me out too much.

5 What's the deal with Geneon releasing all these "Eeewww!" titles in R1? They also did Popotan.

6 Yeah, but Popotan is actually worth watching.

7 Would Please Twins fit into this category?

Yes, I saw Koi Kaze not long ago. My verdict is that it’s a beautiful story about a very ugly subject. I’m glad it got made, but I hope it’s not a trend.

9 bzzt.  Marmelade Boy predates both Koi Kaze and Please Twins by a fair margin.  By "mainstream" I presume y'all are excluding all the porn in that particular subgenre.  For that matter, what about Maze, which I just finished re-watching last month?  Even though it was issued in the States in one of the cheapest, nastiest DVD transfers I've seen in a good while...  Utena has three, count 'em, three brother-sister pairings of varying degrees of ickiness.

Now that I think about it, brother-sister incest is one of the more common themes in anime and manga.  It must have to do with the large number of single-child families - as they point out in Genshiken, brother-sister incest is the favored kink of only children for the most part.  Those who actually have little sisters usually know better.

"Utena has three, count 'em, three brother-sister pairings of varying degrees of ickiness."

Ah, true, but the show is not about the incest... that's a side-issue.  Twins, which I did NOT claim was the first (I just wondered if it would fall into the category), is entirely driven by the possibility of incest.

Having typed that, I wonder why I like the show... it SOUNDS icky as all get-out.
