Ahaaaaaa!!!

Video card fried and/or scrambled.

Replaced my nice speedy GeForce 6600GT with my emergency backup card (a Radeon 9200), and I'm back in business.

It's a pretty slow card - a quarter the speed of what I had - but it works.

If I can't get the 6600GT to work again, I think I'll pick up a 7600GS to replace it. Or maybe an X1650Pro.

I'd like a card with dual DVI ports, but there aren't any*, because video card manufacturers are dicks.

* In decent AGP cards under A$500, that is.** If I was looking at PCI-E, I'd have no problems. But I'm not. Bah.

** Well, there's this, but it's not actually available yet, so it doesn't count.

1 I've got a 7600GT (PCI-E, though), and I'm absolutely thrilled with it.  Inexpensive and pretty durn powerful.

2 Yeah, the 7600GT looks like a good card too.

Pity there aren't any games I want to play at the moment.  Except maybe Viva Piñata.

3 I have a 6600GT AGP card that kept overheating (it crashes at about 65C), so I glued a 40mm case fan to it, right on top of the tiny fan that comes with the card.  It doesn't crash anymore.

4 I had the same problem with my 6600GT. The built-in fan is not nearly enough to keep it cool. I actually had to put a case fan on both sides to keep it from locking up while playing Oblivion or Titan Quest.

5 So they don't put adequate fans on these cards at the factory?

That 'splains why my 5500 goes stupid near the end of a long Civ IV session. And then not allow the PC to boot up for the next half hour or so.

Looks like a trip to Norvac or Wacky Willy's is in order.
