Cough Cough Wheeze Edition

Top Story

Not Really Tech News

  • I have RSV - respiratory syncytial virus - and putting a name to it doesn't help at all to be perfectly honest.

I bought a COVID test because I was starting to suspect this wasn't just a cold, and the particular test also tested influenza A and B - it didn't feel like the flu, but okay - and RSV, which hadn't crossed my mind at all.

Good news: My lifetime 100% COVID-free rating remains untouched.

Bad news: RSV is bloody annoying.

The common symptoms in adults match mine precisely, so I haven't developed an idiosyncratic reaction.
If present, symptoms are generally isolated to the upper respiratory tract: runny nose, sore throat, fever, and malaise.  In most cases, nasal congestion precedes the development of cough.  Unlike other upper respiratory infections, RSV is more likely to cause new onset wheeze in adults.
    Still annoying.

1 Finally got that Sapphire video card installed. Physically, it was a snap, but after rebooting, Windows update downloaded its own driver and refused to let the AMD installer work. Then somehow my ethernet interface became disabled. It took several reboots, disabling driver updates, removing anything I could find possibly related to the old card, AND, the final blockage, was uninstalling AMD's Ryzen Master program. THEN the driver installer worked, and then I re-installed Ryzen Master.

Still need to re-enable driver updates... maybe....

Oh, and Sapphire's own card program.
And with that, FPS on World of Warships doubled. SL gained 100 fps or more.

But I had to change my cursor themes back to default, because the black set seems to be XOred which looked like crap.

2 Mauser, when you get s new video card, especially if you're switching from nVidia to and or vice versa, it's a good idea to use ddu to completely uninstall the old drivers.

3 DDU?

Anyway, I seem to have gotten everything, and it's behaving well. I think it's actually kind of impressive that the old 1070 card did as well as it did compared to this, but then you have to realize that anything faster than the monitor's refresh rate of 60 fps is a waste.

4 ddu is Display Driver Uninstaller, a program that can reboot to safe mode and remove all traces of your driver, so you can do a clean install of a new one. It's especially nice, as I said, when you're switching between AMD and Nvidia and vice versa (and now Intel.)  Googling it should give you a link to the download on guru3d.com, but since everything's working for you you probably don't need it.  It's potentially quite useful if you have problems.
Also, your new card sounds like an excuse for a high-refresh-rate monitor. smile

5 Need to get some higher refresh-rate eyes.

And as a new trick, apparently running World of Warships sets something that causes the TV to switch into Game mode when it's active. (Which I've never encountered before) and I don't know what controls that.

6 Higher refresh rates can reduce controller (I include keyboard and mouse) latency to a degree.
The game mode thing mostly seems to reduce input latency on the tv/monitor itself, which is generally seen as a good thing.  You'd have to dig around in your tv's settings.  If you care, you can look on YT for "game mode" and "input latency", or perhaps both together.
And if you're happy with what you've got it's not a big deal.  Me, I figured that if I had a video card capable of generating more than 60 (or more than 120) fps, it might be nice to have a display capable of actually rendering those extra frames, and 120Hz doesnt' cost much extra these days.

7 Pixy, you have my sympathy, but "new onset wheeze" might be the best band name I've seen this week.

Apple pies are delicious. But never mind apple pies. What colour is a green orange?
