Look Ma, No Hands!
Oh look, a new urgent security update!
Really, the difference between open-source software and closed-source software is not the number of bugs, but the manner in which fixes are announced. Err, and the price too.
But this time I managed to completely rebuild MuNu's Apache server with all its attentand modulary without breaking anything! As far as I know...
Update: DOH! Why the hell does the Apache install script in CPanel reset the permissions on everyone's home directory, forcing me to manually correct the settings for 113 users?

Now's your chance to do what makes Open Source great: Find the bug in the install script, fix it, and send the patch in.

Unfortunately, the original bug is in an open source package, but the install script isn't open source.
Posted by: Pixy Misa at Thursday, July 15 2004 08:41 PM (+S1Ft)

And now that you've done it manually, why can't you do something like this to fix the permissions?
cd /home
find . -type d -exec chmod 700 {} \;
where 700 is whatever the permissions should be. I understand the problem shouldn't happen in the first place, but 'find' does most things I would normally consider doing manually like that.

There are some directories in there that will break if I change their permissions from the default. So when I say manually, I mean I wrote a little script but had to carefully edit a list of directories. That's about as manual as I get. ;)

Again!
The database archive server failed a perfectly good disk out of the RAID-5 set. A quick raidhotremove and a raidhotadd - and a 20-hour resync - and it's back again. It would be better, though, if Linux didn't fail disks out of RAID-5 volumes every time a gnat farts in the computer room.

That was the last book I read before I had to resort to Chomsky. Probably why his was so dull in comparison. Maybe if he had an ex-hooker in leopard print spandex....

Exempli Gratia
This is a sad story but such a perfect example of the thesis I'm working towards in
Thought that I have to comment on it.
Via LGF:
The images from the explosion kept running through Sammi Masrawa’s mind as he lay in his hospital bed — a young female soldier with the back of her head missing, a heavily pregnant woman lying on the sidewalk, legs mangled ... screaming “my baby, my baby.â€
Sunday’s blast at a Tel Aviv bus stop had changed his world view.
The 29-year-old Arab Israeli from Tel Aviv was the head of a local committee calling for coexistence between Israelis and the Palestinians.
Now he wants them kept apart.
“A month ago I went to protest the fence,“ he said, referring to the barrier Israel is building in the West Bank. â€Now I believe it can only strengthen us.â€
Sammi has joined the real world. Unfortunately, there are some who will not wake up
even if you literally set off a bomb next to them.

What's interesting about his change in view is that it is clear that he now identifies more with his fellow Israeli citizens than his Palestinian compatriots: "'A month ago I went to protest the fence," he said, referring to the barrier Israel is building in the West Bank. "Now I believe it can only strengthen us.'" The "us" must be a reference to Israel and not Palestine. It's the only way it makes sense. I hope he doesn't get shot as a collaborator.

Bla Bla Bla
I'm just sitting here posting meaningless drivel while chkdsk attempts to make sense out of the disks in my Windows box. No hardware failures, so there should be no data loss. No
significant data loss. Bah.
Anyway, I can't get to my email right now to answer people, so here goes:
Nick - Yes, got it, would upload it except... It's on the Windows box. No, hang on... Ha, it's on the network drive after all. Uploady, uploady... Uploady... I wan't my 512k upload speed back
U-p-l-o-a-d-y... Ah! You may push the button!
Michele - I'd love to help Sgt. Hook out! I've left a comment on his blog, and as soon as my PC comes back, I'll email him.

Anime Reviews
I can't possibly watch or review every anime series around - there's just too darn much of it. But
THEM are making a darn good effort.
Plus, they give Fancy Lala (a wonderful series) four stars, and FLCL (which sucks) two. (Well, they did scrounge up someone who liked it for a second opinion, but hey.) And five stars to Full Moon wo Sagashite. Hmm. And one star to Fushigi Yuugi: Eikoden, which not only sucks but retroactively made the original series suck too.
These people seem to have their heads screwed on right.

O_o
Hey, they're in Arizona. That's cool. I was hoping they would have had a review of Tenchi Muyo:GXP, but I guess there's only so much time in a day. The fourth volume was only just released today(well, maybe it was yesterday...), so I can understand. But it seems odd that they already have a review up for the third series of the OVA, which hasn't been localized yet. Somebody must be watching the Japanese releases.

I wonder if your disproportionately high rate of computer problems is related to the fact you have a disproportionately high number of computers...or did you forget to sacrifice a wombat again?

Well, I do have a lot of computers, and they have a lot of bits in them and hanging off them, and I do some pretty strange stuff to them sometimes.
But have you ever tried to sacrifice a wombat? Unless you soften it up first - a 155mm shell should do the job - it you'll just end up with a blunt knife and an enraged wombat.

Flying Squids vs. Pol Pot
Narutaru seemed a nice little show based on the opening credits and the first episode. By episode three, we have the bad guy proposing Pol Pot's Year Zero program.* Urk.
If he doesn't end up messily dead by the end of the series, there's no justice.
Update: Well, yes, a ten-foot blade through the chest should do nicely.
On the one hand, Narutaru seems to have gotten some really bad reviews. On the other hand, the worst of those were clearly written by idiots, and even the others seem to be of the "I don't understand it therefore it's bad" pattern. We'll see.
Update: On the third hand, this review, which is the only one I've seen that makes the Khmer Rouge link, gives it 4 stars.
* Not by name, but "A simpler society is better. There's no need for electrical or water services. Return to the original agricultural civilisation. I'll kill all medical eggheads, wealthy people and cultured people." doesn't leave much room for discussion.

Yeah, but his buddies show up not long after. They're real pieces of work.
Narutaru is insanely great on its own merits, but the opening credits is the worst case of fraudulent advertising I have yet encountered, unless you count "Michael Moore makes documentaries".
My main beef with the series is that it's far too short at 13 episodes. It doesn't so much end as conclude.
I didn't comment on the Khmer Rouge philosophy, because it's far too common in anime villaindom. I can't quite make out whether this is a serious trend in Japanese blackhattery, or just the East Asian equivalent of "Nazis. I hate those guys."

Well, left and right buttons, and middle button, which opens a link in a new tab in Mozilla. Then I have a button programmed as Back for browsing, two programmed as scroll up and scroll down so I don't need to keep scrolling the scrollwheel, and the last one opens up a Windows Explorer window.
