Tech News

  • The T2 chip in the new MacBook Pro crashes randomly.
The T2 chip controls the touchbar.  Oh, and also storage encryption.  So if it stops working it bricks your laptop.  It does automatically reboot after crashes, but it would be kind of nice if it didn't crash in the first place.

Here's a thirty-seven page forum thread from users whose $4800 MacBooks crashed with related errors.  (MacRumors)

  • If you read AnandTech's Threadripperoo review before, well, they've updated it slightly.  Like, another 12,000 words.  (AnandTech)

  • The wonderful thing about standards, is standards are wonderful things.  Wait, no, that's tiggers.  Meanwhile here's 13 next-generation form factors for high density NVMe SSDs.  (AnandTech)

  • Testing AMD's StoreMI with Intel's Optane produces terrible results.  Credit to Linus for persisting and finding out why - not a fault specifically in either product, but StoreMI likes to cache everything, and a 32GB Optane drive isn't big enough to produce good results on huge game files.  Giving it 256GB of SSD for the cache fixed everything.

But warning: Once you have used a drive under StoreMI you have to hard reformat it before you can use it anywhere else.

Oh, wait, now you don't need to watch the video.  Oops.

1 We REALLY need an editor with some kind of draft auto-save. Just lost an hour of work with one stray back button click with the wrong tab active. TextAreaCache, the crappy new version, did not save me.

3 Grrrr.

Compose in a Notepad window or something?  I hate using web editors for just that reason.

4 Ah, sorry Mauser.  But I just bought a license for a new editor that does exactly that.

5 I was doing my image links, so offline editing didn't help much. I did save one draft (Each time you save a draft, it creates a new file!) but I lost so much, I wasn't sure I could re-create it and maintain the right balance of praise and snark. (Also had to edit the HTML a lot. copying and pasting "size=640x" into a lot of the image links carried over unwanted style info, inserting all kinds of random bits, like three nested span tags.)

Had the image uploads in one tab, the text in the other, and hit back before switching tabs to get the next link, and boom, all gone.

And you can't preview drafts either.

And setting up a new image folder is a PITA because the templates are all wrong.

6 Yeah, I've lost a couple of posts that way recently. I'd taken to saving them to Word, but copypasting from Word causes formatting mayhem.
Saving to DRAFT works.
(Just remember to hit publish...I'm bad about that)

7 Here's a demo of autosave in the new editor.  I'll try to get it available by next weekend, though there's some fiddling involved in creating lots and lots of saved entries (since it saves every time you pause typing).

I can make it auto-restore from the last save, and then add something to let you jump to a previous save if you accidentally delete a whole bunch of text and need to get it back.

This is all in the cards for the new system, but I hadn't settled on the editor until yesterday.  Now that I have, I can hook it up in this version.

Apple pies are delicious. But never mind apple pies. What colour is a green orange?
