Top Story
- OpenAI is now building its own social network. (The Verge) (archive site)
Prediction: This will work out just like Bluesky, only with even more deranged screeching.
Might be a cool gig for the developers, as long as you have another job lined up for when the whole thing burns down, falls over, and sinks into the swamp.
Tech News
- Nvidia has announced its new RTX 5060 Ti starting at $379 and RTX 5060 starting at $299. (Tom's Hardware)
With the teeny tiny drawback that actual retail prices start at $529 and you won't be able to buy one at all.
Even hardware review channels with 16 million followers can't get hardware to review.
About the only thing this launch does is put a cap on the price AMD can charge for its 9060, and it doesn't even do a good job of that.
- 4chan got hacked. (Ars Technica)
It sounds like it got hacked a lot.
- Figma sent a cease-and-desist letter to no-code startup (don't ask) Lovable (seriously, don't ask) demanding that the latter company remove the term "dev mode" from its product, because somehow Figma has a trademark on that term. (Tech Crunch)
What.
- Just a reminder: Nanashi Mumei is Shachimu, and Gawr Gura is Senzawa.
In both cases their old channels have over a million subscribers already so they won't have any problems if they decide to pick up where they left off. Though Shachimu has already said not to expect such a thing, at least not any time soon. Chronic health issues do not resolve themselves with a change of avatar.

Odd that when Boomers wax nostalgic about the '70's they seldom mention the CB craze, I suspect because the snobs of the Academic&Intellectual Complex were always disdainful of anything which was popular with actual working people such as truck drivers.

There were a few movies centred around CB culture (including the famous one with Burt Reynolds and Sally Field). But, yeah, most of the kids I work with get the glazed looks in their eyes when I start talking about that, or 'zines, or any of the other wild stuff that went on prior to 1990.

Also, that techraunch article confuses trademark and copyright pretty early, so I don't think they know anything.

To be honest, Gura/Senzawa might not be back that soon either. She has commented in the past on health issues of her own, which while not as severe as others in Hololive had to deal with, was not insignificant. That Amelia, her closest friend in Hololive (To the point they were roommates for a time.), has already left, would not have helped. I do suspect her disagreement with management is somewhat different that what others have had though.
What is not very helpful is Calli, Kiara, and Ina trying to play fire brigade. I know they mean well and want to help, but they are not either the marketing or the PR department for Cover/Hololive, they are the products and performers. They should really try to soft-pedal explanations and leave that to others, especially to management and others outside the company like Mint.

I suspect Senzawa will pop up, but I don't expect her to be a five days a week streamer like Nimi or Mint. She's burned out or stressed out or something, and she needs some time.

I mean, I am prejudiced against marketing, HR, PR, and legal, but a real justification for some elements of those, or of specific policies, is that rare/hard circumstances are common, and chasing what feels right will unnecessarily confuse maters and create friction. There's a real challenge here for performers that rely on a calculated appearance of sincerity. but, people leaving is also a challenge for everyone.
