Note To Self

The perfect laptop doesn't exist.  The perfect laptop is kind of expensive.

1 Half-height arrow keys?  Minus half a point.

2 Our ZenBooks were such a huge disappointment. I had UX303LB and wife had UX303L or something. Pointers died, keyboards died with keys wearing out and popping all over. Neither lasted more than 3 years.
I bought a Dell in a retail store that was 100 times better (except for Zenbook's amazing screen), but also 3 times cheaper.

It was my 2nd time of trying to buy expensive laptops. The first time was back in the early 2000s, when I had a Sony Z. That thing only lasted 3 years and died with a DC-DC failure. That trauma taught me that the expensive ones are a waste of money, although I liked that Sony otherwise. It absolutely didn't have the trouble of ASUS.
Anyway, never again.

3 The problem with Dell is the keyboard layout.  The model I have right now has the Four Essential Keys, but none of the current lineup do.
And I'm finding that this one just doesn't have the RAM or CPU I need for work.  The Zenbook 14X Space Edition has twice the RAM and nearly three times the speed.

4 I like my Zephyrus G14 but I've only had it a year and a half.

5 The perfect laps-top would have a CPU that wasn't just some ridiculous cut-down desktop chip, or some franken-viathan with e & p core stubbed on like a 6-year-old designing a ponywhale with extra seating.  It would have an absurdly-high-DPI display that was right about 14" with a proper 4:3 aspect ratio, one of those wonderful IBM laptop keyboards (but without that stupid nipple), and a CPU that could playback video without breaking 3W (1W would be great!), but could ramp itself up to around 35W when you need it to.  I mean, basically I want an X40, but with better guts and display.

It's a laptop, so it should have low-powered storage (and I really wish more SSD/NVME drive reviews talked about the power they use: 9W can make a huge difference in battery time) and I have come to truly love a decent backlight for the keyboard (although the X40's "dome light" or whatever you'd call it works pretty well), though I wish they'd give them more dimmability: the lowest level on most of 'em is still far more than I need.

But, yeah, put a ryzen in that space laptop, and I'd be pretty happy to pay $2k.  I mean, if I had a spare $2k that wasn't going to get burnt up in the next two months because rents are going up more than 50%.  Haha, no Joe Biden is great.  I'm so happy.

6 Unfortunately, the perfect laptop for me is an extinct species, at least factory new ones.  I would have to hope refurbished ones appear to have much use.

Apple pies are delicious. But never mind apple pies. What colour is a green orange?
