Spring Season - Not So Summery

I wrote a nice little summary of all the shows from the Spring season, and then I clicked on the wrong thing and the editor ate it.

Sigh.

You'll just have to read the posts for now.

Okay, I'll at least list the ones I plan to watch:

El Cazador de la Bruja - May be a rehash of Noir, but I haven't seen Noir.  First two episodes are solid.
Darker Than Black - Mysterious, without the incoherence of Kiss Dum.
Rocket Girls - Looks like fun. Rockets. Girls. What more do you need?

And the ones I'll give a try:

Tengen Toppa Gurrren-Lagann - Extremely silly, but I'll give it at least a couple more episodes.
Claymore and Sisters of Wellber - Both show potential, but could fall into the great Cliche Swamp without warning.
iDOLM@STER XENOGLOSSIA - Rocket Girls seems to have taken the same formula and distilled it down to its essentials, but this still looks like it's worth a try.
Kami-chama Karin - But only because I want to know what the hell is going on.

1 Ugh, no. Mai-HiME's most important feature was the cute girls beating the living shit out of each other. Xenoglossia takes on the fighting theme far more seriously. Rocket Girls is more about achievement and otherwise story-driven, as much as I can see. Sure they "pilot" stuff, but even then the amount of piloting is drastically different. A capsule occupant is more of a test subject than a pilot.

2 Xenoglossia is a fighting anime?  Huh.

3 It's more your standard "Save the World" mecha show... with cute girls.  No fighting amongst the girls.  Not yet, at least.

So far, it's been pretty light fare, but given the staff involved (and what plot elements have been revealed), I figure it'll get more serious with time.  The first few episodes have been a little formulaic in spots, but I'm enjoying it.

The Rocket Girls comparison seems off the mark, though... Xenoglossia is classic Sunrise (or, for that matter, classic ANIME).  Shallow and fun.

4 Rocket Girls is certainly fun, and so far doesn't seem especially deep.  I'll definitely be watching it, and I'll give Xenoglossia a couple more episodes at least, so I'll report back after that.

The comparison was just on the level of cute teenage girls piloting spacecraft on fairly flimsy pretexts, not any deep insight gleaned from respective first episodes. wink

Xenoglossia obviously has a story wrapped around this, what with the mysterious girl and the mysterious giant robot and the glowstick pendant thingies; Rocket Girls is just girls flying rockets.

I wonder how long they will run.  Rocket Girls looks to be 12 episodes - there are 12 listed on the official site, and it's moving pretty quickly so far.  I wouldn't be surprised if Xenoglossia is longer.

I've really dug Xenoglossia so far, moreso than just any of the other shows that have come out this season... though El Cazador and Nagasarete Airantou are close seconds.

I'm seeing a lot of Stratos 4 in Rocket Girls. I sure hope the producers aren't serious about their depiction of the Solomon natives.

El Cazador has tracked Noir so closely thus far that, if it doesn't start showing some originality soon, I probably won't bother with the rest. I need to cobble together some screens on this one, because a couple of the character designs have been setting off warning bells in the back of my head.

I need to see a bit more of Xenoglossia to make a judgement call. We've already seen what look like Misato and Gendo clones. And there have already been way too many penguins.
