Speaking Of Which...
The scanner I bought last year (a Canon Lide500F) has been superseded by the Canon Lide600F, which has twice the resolution. 4800dpi instead of 2400. Same price.

I wonder if it makes any practical difference whatsoever.

None whatsoever. Standard printing like magazines and most books is at 300 dpi. Really high-end printing tops out at about 600.

It is a film scanner as well as a paper scanner, though.

And I assume you're talking about the colour resolution. Text has to be higher than 300dpi, surely.
