2 If my company offered me a 25% raise, I'd be singing their praise to the heavens and dancing in the streets. But our CEO and CFO were very clear at our last annual all-hands meeting that our annual raises, merit increases etc. would not be scaled to inflation, we simply couldn't afford to do that, and they actually showed the math. They did point out that our bonus pool, while not directly tied to inflation, basically was in terms of results, which has seemed to be the case.
At Boeing, with their current problems, lets say I want some of what they're smoking, especially since a lot of the problems seem to be of the "the employees aren't getting the job done" variety.

Whatever that means.  The employees didn't like it, though, and agitated for the game studio to be spun off into its own entity, and were told to pound sand, so they quit.

6 My new company had a town hall month and announced, among other things, that there wasn't going to be a bonus this year, because revenue was down something like 10% because everyone who wanted to remodel their kitchens has already done so.  And raw material prices have skyrocketed.

7 Sorry David, but as one of the workers in question, it was actually a shit deal. For example, it also eliminated a performance bonus plan that typically paid between 3.5 and 6%. So that supposed 25% raise is more like 10%. Then they knocked about $5/month of the cost of the medical plan. Then they said they'd give us a second 401K, with no more than about 4K a year in company match (so you'd have to reduce your take-home by another $4k to get it), and said that replaced both the bonus AND the pension they won't reinstate (depending on which press release you read). And then there were other changes, like how if you called in sick AFTER the start of the shift, you could end up getting fired. Also, instead of getting all your vacation time added on your anniversary date, they were going to dribble it into your account a few hours a week.
Boeing's problems trace back to management (The door plug got closed by an unqualified employee, it turns out, because managers were pressing to get the interiors installed and the qualified employee wasn't there.)

9 That thing with the PTO is because if they give it to you all at once, it's a liability, and if you (say)  quit the day after your anniversary, they have to pay the entire amount to you. (Not trying to justify it, just explaining it.  Something I learned about when I was working for a payroll compony.)

10 Companies hire bureaucrats to plan HR stuff. The bureaucrats write reports suggesting such and such ways to change stuff while meeting criteria. Sometimes a plan that seems reasonable to HR, and gets all the management signatures is insane. (I probably owe apologies here as well. I thought 'put engineers back in charge' over hyped engineers. Well, I have since read more about Boeing's management wrt engineering.)

11 Thanks for that clarification Mauser. I had seemed to remember that there was a Boeing employee in the community here and was wondering if we would hear from you. As Pixy has been saying, it's very hard to find articles that actually give much in the way of details. "25% raise" sounds like a big deal "25% raise over 4 years" is still nice, but not huge, and if you assume, as you say is the case, that pay is already way below what it should be... And of course all the other stuff you mention. That ~98% vote in favor of the strike does say that the deal was likely pretty bad in ways that weren't obvious in the reporting.
