2 Personally, I think my expected values for experimental screw ups is many times greater than my expected values for discoveries of new physics.  I think the ratio of former to latter might possibly /need/ to be expressed in decibel scale. 

3 I had a long and detailed, and mostly over my head, discussion with a physicist on the standard model a while back, where we were discussing the fact that a great many physicists agree that the standard model is horrible and broken, and yet accurately models everything we know, and every alternative has so far failed testing.
My characterization, which he disliked but could not formulate better without going into esoteric terms was "the standard model isn't really a theory. It's a simple table of particles and forces. So far, we haven't quite filled in every cell on that table, and we don't really have a good explanation of WHY the table has that number of cells and what the axes really mean, but any time someone claims to have found something that doesn't fit into a defined cell, it's experimental error."
Eventually someone is going to come up with a theory that explains what the various forces really are, and why and how they are associated with the various particles. And that explanation will probably seem incredibly weird to us with our current understanding, and will turn science on it's head. But it's almost inconceivable that it will introduce any new forces, particles, or behaviors.
