  • What the heck is Broadcom doing with VMWare?  (MSN)

After Broadcom - which makes small boring chips in huge volumes - acquired VMWare for $69 billion, it laid off hundreds of staff, cancelled perpetual license in favour of subscriptions, and removed almost all product offerings.

    Why?

As the article explains, it's because Broadcom only wants 600 customers for any of their business units.  If you're not in the top 600 for that market, you simply don't exist, and your needs are irrelevant.

The company made $14 billion in profit last year so this approach seems to be working for them.

But if you're the 601st company on their list and reliant on VMWare, you're paying a lot of attention to competitors' products right now.

1 When I see names like Estes Express Lines and Goya Foods looking to find somewhere else to go, especially with phrases like "I'm not one of their top, probably 600 customers, so they've been very clear to me where I fit in that pecking order," I feel like there's a bloodbath coming, but maybe Broadcom doesn't care.  I guess the big question is how long is it going to take to get RoI on that acquisition cost with a drastically-trimmed customer list.
Goya Foods is in every supermarket, and if you spend a lot of time on the interstates, you probably see an Estes truck every day.  Goya's a billion-dollar company and Estes has 20,000 employees.

2 "If a driver attempted to charge before their turn, the chargers would simply not communicate with the vehicle."
Or if they don't have a "Gavin Newsom for President" bumper sticker, no doubt.
