I don't know. I thought the idea sounded cool back in 1992, but that was before I encountered the fansubs of
Daa Daa Daa Daa, which has a similar premise, and stank on ice.

Hardly. I was reading manga in Japanese over twenty years ago. And watching anime almost thirty years ago.
Imagine being in my shoes in 1984, trying to sell people on anime.
From my POV, almost all fans are Johnny-come-latelys. Not that there's anything wrong with that. It's about time!

I was gonna say it is ironic you use Amy's pic for the category, because getting into Anime was a "spread effect" from watching Futurama eps on Cartoon Network last summer. It was on at 9:30 then, and The Big O followed it. I was too busy writing stuff to change the channel, and then I thought "this is pretty kewl", and was watching rather than writing.
So I guess I could blame blogging at night for my Anime problem. {*_+}

You're in for a great ride, by the way. In its later episodes, FMWS went from being a show I simply enjoyed to a personal all-time favorite. It only gets better and better.

Subsubsub Genre
Has anyone worked out a classification system for anime series about young girls who long to be idol singers and are suddenly granted the power to turn into teenagers and launched into a successful but traumatic career?
Taking into account such factors as the species of their talking animal companions, whether or not they are dying of cancer, that sort of thing?
Just wondering, that's all.
It's getting as bad as robot maids and schoolgirls falling into parallel universes that only they can save.

The end of that piece had me itching for the day Den Beste gets around to watching Evangelion beginning to end.
Critics say that Japan is merely a cultural prism, absorbing influences from abroad and reflecting them back, albeit altered to Japanese taste. But many say that it is precisely the attraction.
"Japanese culture absorbs things, but then puts a different interpretation to it," said Naoki Takizawa, a top designer for the fashion house of Issey Miyake. "Some people may say that we don't correctly understand the history of what has come from overseas. But we attach a different creativeness to things . . . our own sense of beauty."
If there's any one prime case of the Japanese absorbing outside influences (Judeo-Christian mythology) and mixing them with their own quirks (giant freaking robots), that is it.

Or maybe this is the funniest thing I've seen all year. It's certainly one of the weirdest things I've seen, and also one of the best. These are the opening and closing sequences for the TV series and for the OVA series that followed it, Jungle Guu Deluxe. Note that the files sizes for the openings are somewhat on the large side due to the frenetic scene-shifting involved. The closing sequence of Jungle Guu Deluxe is a classic, but you really need to watch the show to appreciate it fully.
