And The Not So Good

Ah, yes. I'd forgotten how much fun it is trying to install Linux on the latest hardware.

So far, Fedora (which is equivalent to Red Hat 10) doesn't recognise my IDE RAID controller, my gigabit ethernet, or my video card. Gigabyte (who made the motherboard) have a driver available for the RAID controller. All I need is to put it on a floppy and... This new machine doesn't have a floppy drive.

So I'm downloading Mandrake 9.2 now. Which will take about... 10 hours.

See you all tomorrow, then.

So Far, So Good

Yuri, my new Athlon XP 2800+, boots into BIOS.

Which means I have failed to destroy anything.

So far.

One gripe: The cables on the little extra port thingies that come with the motherboard aren't long enough, so you can't use the nonexistent slot to the right of the AGP slot. Poo.

Sloweron

AnandTech has a detailed comparison of Intel and AMD's low-end chips. To keep it short: Intel get slaughtered in every test. I'm so glad I didn't get a Celeron...

But guess what Munuvia is currently running on? Gotta fix that.

Printy Goodness

I've mentioned my search for a printer here previously. I was strongly tempted by the Canon i865, which is perfect for what I want except for the minor critical failing that there is an even better model available, the imaginatively named Canon i965.

The i865 is a four-colour, 4800x1200 dpi printer; the i965 is a six-colour 4800x2400 printer. So, obviously I want the i965, 'cause it's got more colours and more dots.

Problem: As of my last writing, the i965 was not available anywhere in Australia.

Now it's available in my local computer superstore. (When I say "local", I mean local. It's closer to my house than the nearest newsagent or grocery store. Of course, I do live in the wilderness...)

So: New computers, meet new printer. I just hope they get along better than my modem and my router...

Bitzenpieces

CPUs: check.
Memory: check.
Cases: check.
Disk drives: check check check check check check check check check check. (No, I don't think I went overboard there. Why do you ask?)
Optical drives, asst'd: check check check check check. (Hey, they're cheap.)
Motherboards: One out of two.
Fancy whiz-bang cordless keyboard and mouse: check.
Graphics cards that I don't really need but bought anyway: One out of two. But that's okay.
Power supplies without which nothing is going to work: None.

Cows.
