Someone Forgot To Tell The Weather Fairies
It's December now. That's summer in the Southern Hemisphere. The weather right now would be considered only moderately chilly... Were itfor the middle of winter.

Seagulls
So yesterday I was down at Phillip Island to see the penguin parade (the penguins are cute but the wind was coming straight from Antarctica - literally) and before the penguins came along there were a whole lot of seagulls about. Also dead cuttlefish, but they don't feature in this story.
And the night before that I was watching the filthy neo-hippies - the Occupy $location crowd - being rounded up in Melbourne. And then I realised: The Occupy crowd are seagulls. The territoriality, the sense of indignant entitlement, that what's theirs is theirs and what's yours is theirs, and the unshakeable belief that the can make a mess anywhere they like with no repercussions - they're seagulls.
What to do with this information I'm not yet sure, but identifying the problem is a good first step.

As important as it is to fix things that are broken, it is even more important not to fix things that aren't. The Occupy mob have as much sense of economic and political reality as a dead armadillo does of nuclear engineering, and the results if they were put in charge would be similarly unpleasant.

The education bubble is not some conspiracy by big biddness to bankrupt their potential customers, it's a perfectly predictable set of unintended consequences.
The liberal arts degrees were oversold by the same credentialed elites who now swoon over these violent antisemitic, entitled dingalings in Zucotti Park. The vast sums spent on higher education were allotted by bureaucrats...who tend to be liberal arts majors...who put the money not so much into into engineering, and other useful endeavors but into courses ending in the word "studies". They then proceeded to vastly expand those departments, which facillitated hiring those with said degrees...which gave the impression that such degrees were a good investment....while expanding the colleges of woolly thinking...thereby increasing the number of people who had those degrees...who could only get jobs in academia because such degrees are, on their own, maladaptations for the real world. The Colleges of BS used the monies spent on education to expand, thereby hiring more people, thereby inflating the BS degree bubble in accordance with tulip economics and Pournelle's Iron Law of Bureaucracy. This had the added effect of raising tuition in order to pay for vastly increased staff who get paid to...ummm....well they get paid. The vastly increased tuition ( >300% at my college since I've been going there) makes it difficult to get a degree without going part time and working...or getting a student loan, which is a bad idea, but, as I found out over a decade ago, can be an important learning experience.
The underclass does not use electronic gadgets whose name begins in the letter"i". Those are used by people who can afford the most fashionable kit ...or in the case of the '#occupy' people, the spoiled children of those who can afford them.
If you want to see a real underclass go look at pictures from the the soccer stadium in Kabul from before "Amerikkka", Australia, France, the UK, Canada (and all the other nations that were appalled at these feral butchers) went in there.
I assume you are fine with this, because this was the state between the time we left in the early '90s and we returned so we have empirical evidence as well as the assurance of the Taliban that this is what will happen if you get your way.

It is kind of meh. I think the problem is they only have enough story for about half the number of episodes they're producing. As a four or five episode series it would have been much stronger.

What gets through your filters is some of the more unusual comment spam I've seen. Curtains? Scissors? I'm guessing most of the more egregious stuff doesn't survive nearly as long.

Yeah, the spam filter is pretty good at catching the obvious stuff, but we get plenty of weird stuff as well, and some of that gets through.

Rainy Rainy Rain
Heavy rain here in Sydney (yay!) with flash flooding reported in several inner-city suburbs and the University of New South Wales under water.
Which is what you get for building a university in a swamp.*
More of the same expected tomorrow, but I stocked up on eatables on the way home and I don't have to go in to the office, so I don't mind much.
Water levels in our dams are at their highest since 2002. In May 2008 we had just 3mm of rain; I think we've had more than that in the last five minutes...
It's okay though; my new phone has internet access so if my house floats out to sea I'll live-blog it.

Something happened - the server got a lot busier than usual for 15 minutes or so. Nothing actually went down, so it's hard to see exactly what caused the problem.

I always thought the term Mid-Atlantic in Mid-Atlantic accent refered to the same Mid-Atlantic as the Mid-Atlantic states.
Turns out that it's an artificial accent deliberately created to be equally well-received in America and Britain - half-way between, in fact - so it really means Mid-Atlantic as in the Mid-Atlantic ridge. Which is why it's not heard any more - it was created at a particular time to serve a particular purpose, rather than arising organically in a regional population.
Which came up because I was watching The Idiot's Lantern just now (new Doctor Who, series 2 episode 7), and the lady in* the television is doing a flawless 1950's received pronunciation (i.e. BBC English) accent.
Which has likewise pretty much disappeared now, encountered only in old TV shows and new period pieces. Which is what The Idiot's Lantern is. And when I started looking things up on Wikipedia, things fell into place.

I think a lot of it has already been factored in; the Australian dollar has been climbing steadily against the US dollar recently.
What will be interesting is whether QEII sparks inflation in the US. There's been some recent discussion that deflationary trends are so strong at this point that the Fed could pump over a trillion dollars a year into the economy before it had any effect on inflation.
