Railroaded

Railroad Tycoon 2 and 3 are on GOG.

This probably matters more for me than my readers (if anyone is left...) because the Railroad Tycoon series has been unavailable in Australia for a decade due to licensing issues.

I bought them and downloaded the installers immediately just in case they realise it's a mistake and disappear them again.

The Expanse

Okay, that was pretty good.

But you killed the crew from explosive decompression, twice, in the first four episodes.  Also, your economics are skewed from reality in several places - by about three orders of magnitude.  Try harder next season, SyFy.

I haven't read the books, and the story moves at a fair clip, but if you have a passing familiarity with hard SF you'll have no trouble picking the threads up.  (One useful tip is that there are a few scenes where you won't understand what's being said, and aren't meant to - it's a made-up language.  Don't worry about it.)

It's nice to see a science fiction series where the most outre element* is a fusion reactor.

If you're looking for classic but not necessarily hard SF, SyFy also recently did this:

Reviews are, shall we say, mixed.  I'm not sure why they picked that particular story to adapt; it would have to be one of the hardest works of science fiction to bring intact to television.

And why call it the "Season 1 Trailer"?  Spoiler alert for a sixty-year-old book: There ain't gonna be a Season 2.

* At least, so far.

Silence In The The Library / Forests Of The Dead - Again

Just rewatched these.  How often do you get TV shows where an episode follows directly on from one that was broadcast seven and a half later?

Cool

Hell Bound and Heaven Sent

I wasn't feeling this season of Doctor Who as much as some of the recent ones (the Amy and Rory seasons, and the first Clara half-season), but they certainly went out with a bang.

Nothing Stephen Moffat likes better than messing with fans' expectations - except messing with fans' expectations of messing with fans' expectations.

Linky.  Nicely done, and worth a read even if you've read it before.

Gonna Party Like It's 1987!

Except they dropped Ruby for Javascript.  Bleh.

The big news is that this RPGMaker MV will support not just Windows, but Mac as well, and games will also run on iOS, Android, and web browser.  Hence the unfortunate switch from Ruby to Javascript for game scripting.

Also, while the standard resolution is a pretty miserable 832x624, beta testers report it works fine at 1920x1080 with a plugin, so it won't be an ant speck on my 4K monitor.
