Switch!

I just switched ISPs. (Yes, again.) Although my current ISP doesn't suck, they now only passively don't suck, where before they actively didn't suck. That is, they are cheap and reliable, but they used to be cheap and reliable and improving every month.

Also, I only* get 16GB of downloads on my current plan. With my new ISP, I get unlimited downloads. And it costs $5 less per month.

Also, I have switched my phone account to a new phone company. In fact, to the company I work for. And have worked for for two years now.

The only reason I hadn't already switched is that there were - two years ago - problems with transferring lines with ADSL. Those problems were long since resolved, only no-one told me. So I've been with Telstra*** all that time.

Anyway, now that I can download unlimited amounts of stuff each month, I need to go shopping for an unlimited disk drive to store it all. Has anyone seen a good price on such things recently?

* "Only."
** "Unlimited."
*** "Ugh!"

1 I just switched my ISP a couple of weeks ago. My bandwidth is currently sitting at about 4.8Meg download, 500k upload. I get 8 static ip addresses (I only need one), I can run servers (very important), NO usage caps, and it only costs US$45/month. sonic.net rocks.

2 I hate you. I get 1.5M down, 256k up, 1 static IP, can run servers, no usage caps, Aus$120 per month. Mind you, a year ago I was paying $160 per month with a 2.5GB usage cap, dynamic IP, no servers (all the interesting ports blocked) so things are improving here at last.

3 Aus$120? That's about US$10, right? That's not so bad.

4 Bah, I meant to included this in my first posting. Before the switch I was getting 1.3Meg/128k for $65/month. I love deregulation.

5 Don't you hate it when you didn't get the memo?

6 Thank heavens I don't get into computing more than I already am. I have enough expensive hobbies.

7 Decent internet access in Australia is expensive. But only a year ago decent internet access here was unbelievably, hideously expensive, so this is a huge improvement.

10 err, no ul/dl caps, 2MBit/512k cable modem, no mailboxes, dynamic NAT'd ip (so no servers, boo)... $30 US Oh, and an very nice basic cable channel selection for $40, which is the only reason I'm not switching to someplace that I can run a server or three from.
