Atom is better specified than RSS. But it's turned into an over-engineered piece of crap, and it's XML, which has turned into an over-engineered piece of crap.
I was up until 1AM fighting with a "standard Atom [feed] with standard extensions" that couldn't be parsed with a standard Atom parser - on my day off - and I am peeved.
