Friday Afternoon Meeting Blues Edition

Top Story

  • Minor correction to the story on Intel's A770 graphics card: It starts at $329, but that model has 8GB of RAM.  The 16GB model is $349, which is a great price for a 16GB card if the card (and the drivers) are otherwise good.  We'll see once the reviews come in.

  • Google is shutting down its game-streaming service Stadia.  Expectedly.  (Tom's Hardware)

Everyone predicted its imminent death within days of its launch, because game streaming services suck, and Stadia both sucked and blowed because you had to pay for the service and then pay for the games as well.

1 The Mythbusters tested the bullet-in-the-air thing some years ago, and came to the same basic conclusion:  don't.

2 The classic Hatcher's Notebook has a section on firing into the air, and their biggest problem was figuring out where the bullets landed in order to time them, because the wind at ground level can't be used to predict the wind at various heights. It's been a few years, and of course my copy is in a box, but IIRC, they set up in an area with a shallow flat pond and test-fired a machine gun into the air to locate the general area the shots would land.

The big variable for them with near-vertical shots was whether or not the bullet had enough spin on it to successfully turn over at the top, or if it ended up tumbling, in which case the velocities were smaller. The linked simulation study doesn't seem to have considered wind or tumbling.

3 "The Brave browser will soon start blocking those annoying cookie consent banners. "
If they add the ability to autohide those obnoxious "sign up for our daily email!" popovers I'd switch right then and there.

6 I used the Dissenter browser, which is based on Brave, but with better privacy. Although I can't be sure if it's related to my instability when watching YouTube.
