I Aten't Dead Edition

Tech News

  • Well, maybe a little dead.

  • Resolved a weird and long-standing performance issue with the system at work by turning off threads in the application server and using a full process for every worker.  Magic.

  • The designated office area at New House can fit 12.2m of desk in an L shape - almost exactly 40 feet.

Do I need 40 feet of desk space?
    No.
    Am I gonna?
    Darn tootin'.

  • Similarly, there's quite a wide U-shaped hallway that wraps around a core area (kitchen / bathroom) and leads to all the other rooms.  I can fit 16 bookcases along the blank sections of wall without putting anything in an actual room.

  • In which bad things happen to bad people.  (Pluralistic)

    Ah, the schadenfreude is overpowering.

Disclaimer: Please, sir, can I have some more?

1 Apparently the original owners of my new house talked about closing off the big, high-ceilinged living room and turning it into a library, complete with stained-glass windows. If they'd done that, the place would have been even more appealing to me. I'll be adding lots of shelving once the floors are redone, but I think my library will be part of the basement buildout that's maybe six months down the road.

The finished basement will also include a good-sized locking climate-controlled {network, server, film, camera, sword, gun} room.

2 Guaranteed: if you set up 40 feet of desk space, you will shortly find that you do, in fact "need" all that space. And probably more.  Just as work expands to fill the time available, so does clutter.

3 I appreciate this sentence: "The digital media industry wants to eat its cake and have it, too."

4 Well, I only buy "music" from the actual musicians at the show, usually in the form of a compact disc or a slab of vinyl.  That way we cut out the lables and other bullshit.  But the joy of seeing a record label actually get what they deserve good and hard is pretty unlimited.

Also, yes, I am a living example of clutter expanding to fill the available space.  What you really need is 40ft of two-tier desk and a giant clutter-manufacturing robot.

5 If you budget allows, I think you should go full Captain Of Industry on your home office--get a 40-foot desk made of mahogany or some other super-expensive wood, and get an over-stuffed, wing-backed desk chair (with real leather upholstery) to go with it.  With all the hassle you've had to put up with in your day job, you owe it to yourself.

Apple pies are delicious. But never mind apple pies. What colour is a green orange?
