1 They should bring back Peter Cushing, if they want Doctor Who to be good.  On second thought, given the state of CGI and the morons who perform those abominations, they shouldn't do that.

2 Also, re: those obviously shilled VPNs, if you're just wanting essentially an https proxy, wouldn't it be vastly more secure (and possibly cheaper) to muddle up something with digital ocean droplets or the like?

3 The biggest problem with any new Who is the BBC itself. Their policies officially require a degree of wokeness (like the 1/6th LGBT(D) quota for actors), they control the pool of available writers and guest stars, and they rather bluntly shape the narrative. I think the best part of the Davies announcement is that they were forced to partner with an outside company to get someone to take over the show.

Of course, we don't know yet how much more damage the current team will do with their final season. If they really give it the old scorched-earth treatment, perhaps the entire universe will need to regenerate along with the Doctor.

4 I don't think anything good will come of the team that bought us the previously-unknown-regeneration black Doctorette.  I don't have a problem with the character as such, but I bet half the reason she was cast was so they could generate outrage and then bask in the glow of their own self-righteousness.
I'm not even opposed to the gender-swapping thing, if it's done well, which Jodie's run wasn't.  Missy's portrayal was exceptional.  I'm convinced she studied the original series episodes, because--her loopiness aside--she had that mix of aristocracy over thug down perfect.  The big problem with gender-swapping characters is that it's an admission you can't come up with your own female heroines, but instead have to steal the reputation of an existing male one.  I'd give a female 008, for example, a fair watch.

5 As for VPNs, anyone who has a Raspberry Pi at home can use Tailscale with the Raspberry Pi configured as an exit node. It has the additional advantage of being free. I suppose that if your home internet connection is slow and you're halfway around the world from it, that wouldn't be ideal, but Tailscale is so trivial to get working that I don't know why anyone who can doesn't set it up.

6 I think the best way to retcon Doctor Who is: After the Sixth Doctor was shot in LA, he settled down with Omaha, Nebraska as his home base. Okay, of SG1, Star Wars, Star Trek, and Doctor Who, I have the least idea of how to fix Doctor Who after the rightsholders/management are put to death.

7 Methinks you are mistaking the Sixth Doctor for the Seventh, since it was Sylvester McCoy's Seven who got shot in the movie.
There does seem to be a level of suspicion about Davies' return given some of his expressed opinions seem to endorse the horrific story ideas that the current regime has given us.

8 No mistake. If you want to retcon out all the woke bullshit, you skip McCoy.

9 That's not Ace, Pat.

10 More seriously, my issue with McCoy's doctor--who, in some ways, was a breath of fresh air after Colin Baker's--was that by then, the episodes seemed frenetic, and also like they'd filmed four hours of programming, and then realized they needed the story to be only 3 hours long, so they cut random stuff, but mostly plot exposition, out.  Also, the storylines were sometimes kind of lazy, like the one about the man-eating apartment tower that was a retread of a Monty Python skit.

11 The McCoy's years were considerably less batty than any part of the new series, even with the shots at Thatcher et al. - though the quality could be uneven, especially at the beginning of his run when Andrew Cartmel was just getting a handle running the story team while the late John Nathan-Turner was battling a serious case of 'get me out of here' as the show runner.

Oddly enough, I was musing to an acquitance the other day about what it would have been like if Ray, not Ace, was picked to replace Mel as the companion for the Seventh Doctor.  The dynamic would have been dramatically different.

Colin Baker was easily a better actor to play the Doctor, but once again, the Sixth Doctor was screwed by management, including at the start when they wanted the Sixth to be 'different.'  It was a real pity, since Baker genuinely wanted to play the good Doctor, unlike some of the previous incumbents.

It is not like the series only started heading into messaging with the new series or even with the McCoy years - The Green Death and The Sunmakers are classic examples, on both sides of the spectrum.
