Dust Biters Anonymous Edition

Top Story

  • Repeat after me: We have a hot prospect expecting to close today but if you act right away...

Actually, this time I believe them, because (a) they provided details that were not to their advantage and cooled me down on this property, and (b) they didn't claim a hot prospect so much as a room temperature one.

Either way, bleah.  I'll have my agent check out my top two alternates but I'm getting ready to activate Plan B.

  • I'm not sure there is a top story today.  Well, the Washington Post says that some of the cryptographic signatures on the Laptop from Hell check out proving that the emails are from who they say they are and did in fact say what they say when they were sent, but we knew that 18 months ago.

Tech News

  • YouTube has added 100 free TV shows and over 1000 free movies.  (Mashable)

Where are they?  What are they?  No-one knows.  You can't browse the list; you can't search for them; and if I click the link to see even a sample of the TV shows I get a purple monkey error.

"It's personalised" says YouTube, which apparently translates to "fuck you".

Also, the small number of free movies I could find that are actually viewable in Australia are crap.  But then so is Netflix.

  • Canada will ban sales of combustion engine cars by 2035.  (Engadget)

Has Canada ever seen Canada?  There is no country in the world that would benefit more from global warming or that is less suited to electric vehicles.

  • Phenylephrine is useless.  (In the Pipeline)

On the one hand, it's not a precursor to meth.  On the other hand, it does nothing.  And there are many cheaper substances that fit both those roles.

  • QNAP again.  (Bleeping Computer)

    Seriously?

Disclaimer: Plan C is a cardboard box.

1 archive.org has quite a few movies, and other stuff I've never heard of (including a TV series with Andy Griffith as a trash-picking astronaut https://archive.org/details/salvage-1-complete-series ).  Probably not much newer stuff, though, which for me is okay.  Every time I watch something from the last 20 years I start feeling sorry for the people who are forced to have their names displayed on that garbage.

2 "The government will gradually ramp up pressure on automakers, requiring "at least" 20 percent zero-emissions sales by 2026 and 60 percent by 2030."
4.6% of new vehicle registrations in q1 2021 were zero emissions.  Good luck quadrupling that in only 5 years...although I guess if the auto makers just make relatively fewer ICE cars some people will have no choice.
Meanwhile, I'm waiting for someone to explain how the couple hundred cars in my apartment complex's parking lot are gonna get charged.  (Nobody wants to admit that there are not going to be 100 chargers put in or that nobody's going to want to schedule waking up at 2AM to take their turn on a handful of chargers.)

4 Why should the policymakers worry about things like getting up at 2AM to charge a car?  The most suffering they'll have to do is when they smell you on their way to catch a private flight to that one special island that everyone knows to not mention.

5 a lot of these green energy 'x will y by z' declarations have to be understood in the context of the stuff regimes claim while in the process of failing.

Physical and engineering realities can be intractable.

If I tell you to build me a bunch of tech from Gundam, the only result will be that I am not your boss.  (Okay, technically it is possible that a crazy funding source could in principle hire me as a supervisor, and hire a 'you' who wants to make Gundam tech, and is confident in being able to do so.  It would not make me a competent leader, or necessarily result in you delivering the tech.)

A lot of this 'taking them seriously' stuff is akin to writing a bunch of essays early in Gulf War II about how intelligent, informed, and honest Baghdad Bob is.

Trudeau is not going to remain in power until 2035 without holding elections, and he probably is not going to continue being able to fraud his way into staying in power.

6 Archive.org had some real surprises.  Someone actually posted, with good quality video no less, all six episodes of Galactic Pirates with the English dub.  Given that the English dub was a UK-only release...Well, it had the classic stereotypes down.

Apple pies are delicious. But never mind apple pies. What colour is a green orange?
