Listen, bub: I live somewhere where the government did something about that. Result: I have been waiting nine years for them to upgrade my connection from DSL. I can't get cable, because they're going to run fiber - eventually. I can't get fixed 4G, because they're going to run fiber - eventually. My options are DSL or [cough] satellite - in a city of five million people.
And the DSL infrastructure hasn't been upgraded at all during that time. Because they're going to run fiber - eventually.
The only worse thing than a monopoly is a government-run monopoly.

Nonsense--you could also move!
Yeah, cities and states need to stop granting cable and internet companies monopolies. Where I live now I only had one choice, but fortunately it wasn't a bad one. In September I'm moving a couple miles away, and I'll actually have two options, one of which is AT&T and the other is the company I'm already using, so I'll probably stick with them.

Eh, governments can always find new and inventive ways to screw things up. In my city, which has ~100k population (abutting a 700k population city) with 2 world-class universities and a world-class innovation center packed in 7 square miles, managed to so PO all the major providers that they threw their hands up in disgust at further fiber deployment ~8 years ago and won't even discuss it to this day. I live on an arterial thoroughfare that is a direct shot to one of those universities and the fiber deployment stopped less than a quarter-mile away. My only real options are cable or DSL, though there are a few dubious fly by night LOS wireless providers that try to gamely make their case.
