Two By Two, Laptops Of Blue Edition

Top Story

  • The Gateway 14.1 Ultra Slim Notebook is $279 from Walmart.  (The Verge)

Yes, Cowputers is still around though now it's a Walmart house brand.

Anyway, this model has the 11th generation i5-1135G7 - only a little slower than the laptop I used all last year while moving house, a 1080p IPS display, 16GB of RAM, and a 500GB SSD.  (The RAM is soldered to the motherboard, though nothing says that anywhere.)

    And the Four Essential Keys.

The 2022 update dropped the four essential keys, and is also significantly more expensive, so don't buy that one.

The screen isn't high-end and the trackpad is a bit finicky, but it's $279.

    And it's blue.

Disclaimer: Retains speed when full would be a good name for a rock band.  Well, not really.

1 The climax of the Retains Speed When Full show is always the hot-dog eating contest they stage during their "Baba O'Reilly" cover.  It's no "Mick Jagger taking a knife to a giant penis" but it'll do.

2 I've been using that Gateway (EVOO) laptop model for several years since my last laptop died and I needed a cheap emergency replacement and saw it reviewed in an ETA Prime video. Overall I've been satisfied, but some more negatives: you can't make the function keys default, so always need to use the Fn key to use F-keys; the power key is on the main keyboard right next to the delete key, far to easy to accidentally hit; the audio in jack has lots of noise; both M.2 slots are SATA only; the fingerprint reader is also cruddy, so I don't bother using it.  Some long term use issues: the glue holding the display into the top cover failed after a year, the included SSD failed in less than two years.
Hmm, no Intel 13th or 14th gen update yet, and the Ryzen models are on Zen 1.

3 Windows PowerToys might be the solution for your function key issues.  One of the functions lets you remap any key to anything else.

The SATA M.2 slot is a bit harder to fix.

4 Gateway is owned by Acer as its' budget brand, sort of like how Compaq was HP's budget brand until the HP's C-suites realized HP's own reputation was essentially that of a budget brand.

I am actually looking for a good laptop with 15.6" screen, since portability is less of an issue for me than sparing my eyes these days.

5 SATA m.2 drives should still be perfectly cromulent for everyday usage, and Amazon's full of them.

Apple pies are delicious. But never mind apple pies. What colour is a green orange?
